I finally got to go for a short run today, and it was about time! Mike came back from Missouri last night and we went for a short run today at Bush Park. There was still a fair bit of ice on the trail and there were lots of trees down! It was pretty wild. One tree was split in half and halfways it was almost 3 feet across. We ended up doing laps around the track and caught up on what happened over mikes travels. It was good to get the wheels turning again, I wasnt feeling like myself with all this sitting around doing nothing. I was going nuts! Anyway, with the weather turning back to normal, it'll be good to get back into the swing of things. The cascade 1/2 is 2 weeks away, should be fun. I need to get my head wrapped around starting ultra training. Ive gotta register for the PCT 50 miler on Jan 1st. The Pain Train guarantees that it is an awesome race.

winter wonderland!
This Sunday, I participated in a modified verson of the Pain Train Challenge. It ended up being about an 8 mile trail run with a group of dudes lacking the sense to stay out of the snow! What a day, there were parts of the trail that had to have been covered in over a foot of snow. It was so beautiful out there, it was unreal. I seriously need to invest in a little (light weight) pocket camera to take on these runs. That'd be awesome. I kept towards the back of the pack, going at a glacial pace. I'd like to blame the snow on the trail for my slowness!
This weather is awesome, but it had really put a hamper on my lifestyle. I ususally bike to work everyday, and the snow has put a stop to that. It has also really slowed my running down too, its tough to run on ice and I dont have a treadmill, so I havent been running much at all. Anyway, I need to grow a pair and go for a run, I'll just have to tread cautiously!

cascade prep
Did my first run since monday today with William "the pain train". We did the first 10 miles of the Cascade 1/2 marathon which is coming up in January (I think its the 11th). Anyway, it felt pretty good overall, it was snowy and cold, the weather has really taken a turn for the worse over the weekend! Im asking Jess to give me a ride to work tomorrow, the bike may not be the best choice in the icy conditions. I am feeling a little sore after the run, but hopefully tomorrow I will feel better. Planning on running on Tuesday and Thursday this week, with a weekend run with the Pain Train!

slacking due to sickness...
so my little guy has been pretty sick this week. yesterday he had a temp of 103, he got up several times in the night, the earliest at 4:30am (when I get up to go run) and I had to put him back to sleep. I came back to bed at 5:30 and slept till 8, it is now 8:23 and he is still asleep. This is unheard of for him! I am really hoping that this extra sleep will help him recover from whatever it is that is making him ill. I am planning on running with The Pain Train this Sunday at Shellburg, it is just going to end up being a light mileage week for me!
Garmin Update:
It is on the truck to be delivered today!! I cant wait!

The Pain Train Challenge is about the leave the station!
Did a nice 8 miler with William and Dennis today, we mapped out the course for "The Pain Train Challenge" coming up on 12/20/08. It looks to be a nice fun run/race! Hopefully the awesome weekend weather weve been having will hold out and it will be nice that day.
Garmin Update: my FR50 arrived in Olathe, KS today, so that means my return should be processed this week and they will be sending me my FR305 soon. I am stoked about that happening.
Anyway, Im planning on running on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday this upcoming week. Hopefully there will be no slacking on my part! Gotta get ready for the PTC (pain train challenge)

been meaning to post...
Ive been meaning to post about his past weeks runs for a while now, but I just keep putting it off. I ran 9 on Sunday with William, it was awesome - I dont know whats up, but you just cant ask for better weather lately, especially for december running! I ran on Monday with Mike, I only did 4.5 because my knees were really sore, I think its because it was getting ready to rain - ive got screws in my right knee and I swear it hurts when the weather changes for the worse. I ran again on Wednesday, this time I did 7.5 and it was a good run. Im planning on meeting up with Mike on Friday and running with William again on Saturday before he does his Corvallis 5k.
Forerunner news! I was using a Garmin Forerunner 50 that I got for Christmas last year. THe only reason I asked for it was because one of Garmins product specialists told me it was Mac compatible. It was not. Well... I kept asking Garmin when it was going to become mac compatible and they kept saying "this date.. no, now its this date..." and so on. I got fed up with it and asked them to exchange it for a Forerunner 305. Its a bit fancier and its actually what I wanted for Christmas last year, but it was too expensive to ask for! So, I mailed the FR50 to them yesterday, and should be getting the FR305 in return, hopefully next week sometime! I am really excited about it.

this past week...
This past week I ran on Monday, Wednesday, and today (Friday). I did 6 on Monday, 7.5 on Wed, and 7.5 today. It all felt really good. My seven and a halfer today was awesome, every lap was faster than the last and I feel like I couldve gone longer. Im gonna try to run with William on Sunday am, hopefully I will fare better on Ball Breaker hill than I did last time!!

lots of updates!
Okay, heres the situation, my parents went away for a weeks vacation... but seriously, I did a nice 6 miler with studer at 5am on this past Friday, felt great, then went home, showered and slept till 10am, it was glorious. Then, William (Trail Series Champ) got in touch with me and we ran at a sweet spot today, we did about 6. It wouldve been fun to go longer, but alas, duty called. This run today was amazing, we started early and it was all foggy and then the further we climbed, the fog cleared. By the time the sun rose, we had some great views of Mt. Jefferson and other scenic views. To get to these views, we ran up a hill that I dubbed "Ball Breaker Hill". It was seriously breaking my balls to get up it. I am really looking forward to running with William again! Gonna run with the Studer tomorrow, 5am. Should be a good run, lots to talk about! Cheers everyone.

6 with speed
Did a six miler with the studerbaker this am with a fair amount of speed worked into it. I did 4 laps at Bush, with my 3rd being the fastest, but the 4th wasnt too far off. I am feeling like I need to ramp my training up just a bit, like adding another 5 or 6 miler into the week to up my mileage and to get ready for ultra training. Im not sure how to work it all out, but will need to take some time soon and figure out a training schedule.

best run in over a year!
Yesterday am, I did 10+ with mike and it was seriously my best run in a long, long time. Everything just worked, you know? In terms of speed and consistency, each lap got faster and faster and my final lap was the fastest of 'em all! I had a really good speed burst for the final 200m or so. With Cascade 1/2 only a couple of months away, I feel really good about it. Yesterdays run put me over 35 miles for the week. That hasnt happened in quite a while.

still rollin along
This week I did a 6 miler on Wed with Mike and again today. Seriously felt great during both of'em. made me wish I had more time in the am for running. Too bad stupid things like work get in the way. We are planning on a 12 miler tomorrow, maybe 16 if there is time. It all depends on what time we start up. I am hoping for a 12 at 5am.
I bought some stuff from Hammer Nutrition for the first time a bit ago. Because I was a first time customer they threw in a bunch of free samples, I was stoked! I was most excited about the Recoverite I bought. I use it after longer runs and it really helps with post run soreness. Havent been disappointed yet!
How is everyone else doing?

double digits again.... finally
Well, back at it. Mike and I did 12+ this am. I definitely hadnt planned on doing that much, but at 10.5 we were both like, "well... lets do one more lap!" conditions were perfect, no rain, not too chilly, it was awesome out. We wouldve been stupid not to do as much as we could! I feel pretty good about it. My next race is the Cascade 1/2 and 2 months out Im already at the distance. So, hopefully by January, I will be in better shape and ready to run it!
Yesterday morning I went and watched a Cyclocross race. It was amazing! The whole atmosphere was electric! It totally made me want to go buy a xc bike and get after it. My bud Mike did the race on his old mountain bike, and really had fun. I took a ton of pics, so I will try to post some of'em in the future.

laced back up
Finally got my shoes laced back up and hit the trails of bush park again! Did a nice 7 miler with the studerbaker today, it was nice being back out there. It definitely felt like I hadnt been out running for almost 2 weeks, but I felt okay overall. Mike's goal is to do 20 to 30 miles each week, so that'll be good to jump on board with him. My plan is to ramp that up once Ultra training starts! I will have to if Im gonna pull off a 50 miler next year.

sick stew
Damn, being sick sucks. I thought I was gonna dodge the bullet when the wife and kid were puking and I was feeling fine, but alas, the sickness jumped on my back and took it too me last night. I feel like Im on the mend now, but we'll see how it all shakes out. I was supposed to go run on Thursday with my homie mike, but there was no way that was gonna happen with the night of sleep I got on Wed. Supposed to go running on Sunday with mike, hopefully I will be ready to roll.
Right now Im listening to Uhh Yeah Dude.

got'r did
did a quick 5.5 miler with mike today. I wish it didnt take me so long to get ready for work because lately I'd be running longer distances during the week. Ive been feeling pretty good lately and want to capitalize on it. Mike and I are still noodling on our plan to get me on track for ultra training. I can picture it now in my minds eye. If anyone is reading this blog, please send a sexy comment my way.

getting it on
Hey! Ive been running a bit more regularly lately. I ran twice this week with mike, 6 miles each, it felt really good. I couldve easily run alot more but time was a factor. Mike was asking me about ultras and I had recently been pursuing some excellent ultra blogs. It definately gave me the tickle to do another one! We have a plan to use the Cascade 1/2 marathon as a spring board into ultra training. The Cascade 1/2 is a few months away, we will use that to get up into the low double digits, then make it our goal to run a 20 miler in February. That'll get me started in my training again. Any advice from more seasoned runners would be welcomed. I will be reading your blogs!

Farewell to Mr. Bill
Goodbye Bill R! Good luck in Idaho. Did a nice 6 miler with mike and bill today, bill is a local runner/tri-guy who is getting ready to jump ship and move to Idaho. It was a good run, Mike and bill are much much faster than I am and they really move, so after the first 2 laps, I was trailing, but not too far. I kept an even distance between them for the remaining 2 laps. It wasnt too bad of a run. I felt pretty good about the pace, etc.. during it all. Im planning on running again with Mike on Thurs, Bill said he may join us again, but who knows. He is leaving the next day. I am hoping to run with Mark Maus in Maryville on Sat. am. before the Bearcat game. Hopefully Mark will be in town, it'd be fun. Anyway, Thats all. Seatbelts.

update
Hey readers, here is a quick update from the runnings of Kurtis G. I ran on Thursday with Mike and we did 7.5. He did some stairs afterwards, but he is hardcore and I alas, am not as much. It was a good run though. Today I ran with my friend Tiffany from Maryville, she is living in Oregon City for the time being and came down to visit us. We ran a bit over 3 and an easy pace, but it was fun just being out and running early in the am. Hope all is well. Seatbelts.

been too long...
ITs been too long since my last post. I have been running, but just not posting. I cant remember all the runs Ive done since 9/25 (my last post) but This morning I did over 6 with mike at bush park. It was good. We were gonna do sprints at South High track, but Mike wasnt feeling up to it, so we did laps instead. It was fun, we chatted it up and then when I got home, Ari was awake at 5:30. NUTS! Thats so stupid. that kid should sleep longer. I know I wanted to. I will try to do better later with my postings. Seatbelts

Who has 2 thumbs and is a slacker?
This guy (imagine me pointing at myself with my thumbs) very disappointed with myself. We have been doing a DIY kitchen remodel and it has been long hours which equals little to no running. I havent run since last week on Tuesday so well over a week off. All the time on my knees doing flooring has really made me feel like I have "old man knees" and hopefully that will clear up soon so I can feel good about life again. I was supposed to run this am with mike, but my kiddo turned down the volume on my alarm clock and I didnt wake up naturally at 4:30am (imagine that!). Anyway, volume has been readjusted, and will be checked regularly. I will do a run this weekend for sure.

We dont need no water

I spilled water all over my macbook today. it sucks. I am worried that I will have to buy a new macbook.
However, I did spill the water after I got back from a 4.6 mile run. I felt rough, I am pretty sore from all the running and cycling I have been doing. I will blame the water spill on soreness and muscle fatigue. yeah.. yeah... thats the ticket!

Double Digits
Did a double digit (10) run today with Mike, and a couple of other guys, Bill and Mark. It was challenging for some reason. I was dogging it at the end of the run, definitely been a while since I ran that distance! I got home and we played with Ari for a bit and then around 9am he took a nap, and so did I! I slept till 11:30 and it was glorious, I totally couldve slept more. Here is what Ive eaten since I got up. I ate a Snickers Marathon energy bar before the run, then when I got home, I drank a glass of chocolate milk as a recovery drink (very good, btw) then I took my nap, and now its 12:30 and I am cooking some chicken to have with some vegies and rice. However, while that cooks, I am making coffee, eating a cookie, a cheeze stick, and drinking a coke (I am a pepsi man). I really dont eat horribly, but I really dont eat great either. I need to work on this somehow. Any eating advice is welcome.

Woah...
It has been awhile since Ive updated. Im not doing too good right now at posting my runs. However, I have been running... probably not as much as I should, at least, I feel that way, but I have been running. Last week I did a couple of BP runs with Mike where we did pick-ups for 1/4 mile every lap. It was great. Yesterday I did 9 with mike with 7 pickups for the run. I was surprised at how good I felt during the whole ordeal. Its probably the longest Ive run in months! Mike is gearing up for Run Like Hell in Oct, I cant do that race b/c I will be in Missouri visiting my family. Im going to try to hook up with Mark Maus and run with him the morning of the college football game. Hopefully that works out. We will have to do 13.1 to mimick the 1/2 marathon I will be missing out on! Im trying to cycle train on off days, which I did this am for about an hour. Anyway...

been a while...
Its been a while since I last posted anything, there maybe some repeat info, but mostly new. I ran on Wed and Fri with mike. We did hills on Wed and I ran 6 with him on Fri, we did some speed pickups every lap, it was good. We finally got all moved in, and on Mon, Tues, and Thurs, I did cycling on the trainer. It was fun. Sorry for the weak post, it will get better, I promise. I am still settling into a new routine at our new house!

Moving Blues...
I havent run since Friday! We started moving from our Apt. on Thurs and it has been crazy busy since. Trying to re-organize is a pain. I have however, set up my trainer in the garage (thats right, I have a garage now) and have cycled in the am the past 2 mornings. I think that is going to be my non-running day thing I do to keep moving. It was hard getting up early today. We finished V for Vendetta last night and it didnt get over until after 11, so it was hard getting up at 5am, Ari got up at 4 and cried, so we both got up to try to calm him down. So I reset my alarm for 5:50 and woke up at 5:47. I was seriously thinking about hitting the old snooze button but thought better of it and hopped on the bike and listened to some UYD.

flipping the script
Wut Up!! I was supposed to do hills today with mike, ran to meet him, and he said he just wanted to do some recovery running. I was so down with that. We ran over 6 and it was good. We ran at a nice relaxed pace and had a nice chin wag (chat). Last week I ran a grand total of 6.18 miles. How embarassing! I totally shouldve ran more.
I feel like I get into this Give Up/Try Hard cycle with my running. I havent really given up, but I feel like that last week was sort of a rest week and I need to slowly ramp up so I dont burn myself out.
I have some plans to do just 1 lap at bush park, then do like a calisthenics routine, then do a cool down lap. I am gonna check www.runnersworld.com for some shiz to rock.
Cheers Everyone.

USA... USA!!!
Watching the Olympics lately. I am ready to watch the 800 and see Nick Symmonds destroy the field! At least I hope he does... It'll be fun to see Galen Rupp run too. I watched him live at Bush Park in his NCAA XC debut - it was awesome.
I did hills today with mike and totaled over 6 miles with warm-up and recovery running. I felt pretty good about it. I am contemplating getting up tomorrow and doing just an easy 3 or 4 miles just to keep the wheels moving.
I finally finished Mikes Fixed Gear bike and now I feel okay about riding mine! I commuted to work on it on Monday and it was fun, Today, I rode my scooter to work and I seriously felt guilty about it! The whole time (okay not the whole time, but certain parts of the ride) I kept thinking about how I could be riding my bicycle! I am going to try to keep riding my bike as much as possible. I am gonna ride the fixie tomorrow to add some more challenge to it.
Any thoughts??

Did just a bit or a shade over 6 today. It was the first time running in the rain this year that I can recall, at least before 6am that is... Today is Ari's b-day party, even though he turned 1 on this past tuesday. We got a pony keg of Widmer Bros Hefe. I am stoked about that, for some reason, that makes the whole thing funner! Easy Trotting
Did an easy 6.5 today with mike. It took just about an hour and felt really good. Mikes family recently blew up a local tri. It was pretty amazing. His twin daughters took first and second in their age group and his oldest daughter (by 2 minutes) got 7th overall women. Pretty awesome.
Tonight starts the BP fun run series, every thurs in aug. I am not gonna make it there tonight, but will do at least one before Aug ends. Hopefully I do better than I did last year.
Gotta jet off to Albany to take my motorcycle endorsement driving exam. Then I will be scooting legal.

I got home, showered up, etc... and crawled into bed and then the kiddo woke up! I got up with him and let Jess sleep in. Today is Ari's first birthday!! It will be a fun day with everyone.

Hill Sprints...
Did some hill sprints today with Mike and Bill. It was good. we did about a 1.5 mile warm up, then I did 4 400s with a decent uphill about 1/2 way through, with a 400 recovery run. Those hills are brutal. My heart hasnt really been in it lately. I had a second interview last Friday and I was supposed to hear about it this past Monday. I still havent heard anything! It is very distracting. Anyway, Ive been listening to alot of Lyle Lovett lately. He is awesome. I suggest his music to anyone.

Holy Smokes!
Okay, so yesterday.... I ran 8 miles with mike with a couple of 1/2 mile pickups towards the end. It was a good run. So then, after that, I went to the Oregon Brew Festival in the afternoon. It was AWESOME!! I had so much fun. I really enjoyed the darker beers but they were all good. I had a blast with my friend Andrew Jones who I took with me as a thank you for helping me with the scooter so much. I was really glad Jess was there too, she made an excellent DD. Otherwise I totally wouldve needed to stay the night up in Portland or just take a cab back to Salem! Im glad I dont drink that much that often. I enjoyed it to a point, but couldnt do it every day/week/weekend like some people do.

Did hill sprints today with Mike. We did 12 200's up Derby Hill at Bush Park. It went good. Started slow, and got faster as the running went on. My best one was :39, and it was my last one! It sure didnt feel that fast. Anyway, Hopefully we will run on Friday and Saturday again. I really enjoyed the back to back run last weekend.

crazy speed workout!
Wow! Just did a wicked awesome speed workout. We did 12 x 400's with recovery in between. My target time was 1:36 and I started out right around there. At about #6 or so I started consistently dropping my time and my fastest was 1:24 and I did like 3 or 4 of them in a row. I was stoked! Anyway, I couldnt believe that I did'em that fast and did that many.
Not too sure what the rest of my week looks like. I will probably do some moderate distance, maybe a hill workout, and then longer on Saturday or Sunday.

Getting back into the swing?
I ran with mike today, first time since the heat training run on Sunday. Starting to feel like I am getting back into the swing of it. My legs didnt feel like they were infused with concrete today so I was happy about that! We did about 6.5 at an easy pace. We both felt like we couldve done more, but he had to go to work and I wanted to save some gas in the tank for tomorrow am.

Heat Run
I did a heat run this past sunday with the Studerbaker. It was awful! We ran to where our house is (about 1.3 miles from Bush Park). I was doing okay there, but on the way back I had serious cottonmouth. I tried to snag some water from a hose attached to a bidness, but the h2o was scalding hot. So... I ran about 1/2 lap at Bush and told Mike he could call me a wuss, but I had to walk home. I just felt like my legs were infused with concrete. I got to a water fountain and took some sips, made it home and drank a ton of water/gatorade. I felt alot better. I think I am finally over my sick shiz (which contributed to the poor quality of the run - dehydration) I skipped the track workout because it was mile repeats and I just didnt have it in me. I should run tomorrow but we'll see, I will definitely do hills on Wed. and run med. on Friday and long on the weekend.
Here is a shout out to Mark Maus - if you read this and check for the ultra recap, thanks! Also - check out the podcast "uhh yeah dude" it is hilarious and I think it will make you laugh alot.

I ran a couple of laps at Bush with Mike today. I was having some crazy-craze heartburn at it was miserable. IT is still happening too... so, I am off to Freddies to get some pepto or something. Hopefully I will be back to 100% by the weekend and will be able to go for an hour or so...
Dr. Carl could run with mike and I this weekend and I really dont like this guy. He is a major D-bag. All this guy can talk about is triathlons, that is seriously It. Anyway, more to follow.
Seatbelts.

Sans the Internets
So, I have been without the internets for awhile. I ran on last Sunday morning with a co-worker from the hospital and we ran for about 7 miles or so. It was good. So here is a good story...
On Sunday I ate at Burger King, the BK, and it was delicious, however, I felt like garbage the rest of the day. I kept re-tasting the whopper all night long. Anyway, I digress... I felt weird all day Saturday and then on Monday too. On the way home I could tell my Shiz just wasnt rockin the way I like. I ate 2 cookies, some spicy hotwings and a salad and felt terrible. Tried to sleep and then had the poops (not the bed) at 1am. I woke up and my skin hurt and I just felt really bad. Jess said "dont go to work" but I really felt like I should go. I went to work and then around 3pm I decided that I HAD to go home because I felt so so bad. So, I went home and went straight to bed. I slept till 7pm, got up and spent a bit of time with the fam, then realized that I was going to puke. I decided to just make it happen and made myself throw-up. It was terrible, It was the first time I had vomited in 8 years!!
Needless to say, I havent gone for a run for a while. I need to very badly, however, I feel like someone has injected my legs with concrete. Ive been biking to work, and I just feel crazy sluggish.
I am planning on running with Mike this weekend, so hopefully I will have recovered from my bout with the bug.
Cheerz everyone! Stay Classy.

first of all check out Salems Nick Symmonds destroying the 800 at the Olympic Trials. That is awesome.
Did 6.5 today, it was a good run. Did 2 laps solo then did 2 more with Mike, it was a good morning.
Now off to work! Stay Classy.

sprints again!
So the sprint workout was 5x1000 at I pace (no idea what that means) all I know is that I was supposed to do them at 4:16 pace. These were brutal! I did the first three slow, and then the final two I did under 4:16. I was happy about that. All that with a 400 meter recovery lap plus a mile warm-up and cool-down. That added up to a bit over 6 miles. I was pleased with that distance for the day after volunteering all weekend at Special Olympics.
Im not too sure what I am going to do the rest of the week for running, probably do some shorter distances during the week and I will try to do over 10 this weekend. We'll see. WORD!

Sluggish
I ran almost 7 miles today with Mike. Usually he is the one who tells the story and I am the one who struggles to keep up. Today... I was the one who told the stories and we both struggled to go at a decent clip. Either way, it was alot of fun. It was a decent run - sadly, that is the longest Ive ran since my 50K.
This weekend is Special Olympics up in P-town (actually Beaverton)... If you want to come help with Awards - call us, we will hook it up! We are the awards directors for the Summer Games. It should be fun.
My Scooter is up and running - it is awesome!!!!

pedal to the metal
Did the Salem Tri-Club track sprint workout today! It was 6x400 with 400 recovery and 6x200 with 200 recovery. With a mile warm-up and cool down. Special thanks to Stephanie for creating these weekly workouts.
The sprint workout felt pretty good, surprisingly. I need to be consistent with this and I know I will see improvements in many ways.
I think the total distance with recovery and WU and CD was just over 6 miles.
Samantha - hook a brotha up with an invite to your running blog!
Stay Classy...

oh snap!
Did a 5 miler today - I was seriously trying to talk myself out of going this morning. I wanted to just stay in bed and sleepy-time it up. I was listening to the podcast "uhh yeah dude" when I was running and it was seriously making me laugh whilst running. If you have itunes, the internet, and a sense of humor, you should check that podcast out. It is HILARIOUS!!
Probably not the best thing to listen to while running, but it is definitely entertaining.
More hot jamz: I was at the mall yesterday and I went into Lidz - a store I always want to go into but feel weird going into it - and the dude working there was playing some cool hip-hop music by 2 dudes, Eligh and The Grouch. They are pretty good. I downloaded some of their albums and it is good stuff! If you feel like checking out some "dope beats" look those guys up. PEACE - WE OUTTA HERE!

vacation runnings
So before we went to Minnesota I took the kiddo for a jog in the stroller the morning of our flight. It was decent, we only went out for like a half hour, but it was good to be moving before I knew we would be sitting around all day traveling.
So when we got to MN, I was totally blown away by how different the towns are set up there. It was kind of unsettling... lots of suburban sprawl, towns melting into towns, etc... strip malls, but it was fun to see family, etc...
I ended up getting to see one of my hometown homies from Missouri. We were neighbors growing up and played high school football together. He now lives in Woodbury, MN and we went for a 3+ mile run together and talked the whole time. We went at about an 8 minute pace for the whole time and I felt it! Compared to all my 50K training it was like sprinting!!
So, I havent done anything longer than maybe 5 miles since my 50k. I am really dreading doing another long run. I know I need to get back in the saddle and go long again, but for some reason, I am scared of how hard it will be!!
Anyway, its great being back in Oregon, Bush Park - here I come! Keep on truckin' and stay classy.

Dude....
Dude(s)... I ran today for the first time since my last run (does that make sense). I feel like I have no motivation. That race was my focus for 4 months and now its over. So Im not sure what to do now! I know I need to run for multiple reasons, but my motivation is like a Yo-Yo. Strikes and Gutters, ups and Downs. I know that I will get back into my groove soon! Off to Minnesota this weekend, hopefully I will get a few miles in while we are there. Peace, Love, and SOUL!

Thanks for the prompting Samantha! :)
So, it has been brought to my attention that I havent posted for 7 days! I totally have meant to, but just havent gotten around to it.
I have been running - not as much as I probably should - but Ive still been getting out there the best I can. I ran with mike on Wednesday (i think) in preparation for his Escape from Alcatraz today [Good Luck Mike!!]. And I ran yesterday, about 3 and a half. I am feeling like I should be doing more, its weird but I am a little antsy about starting up again. I know it is a less pressure situation, but i still feel like "oh my gosh, ive gotta do all these days of running!" but the reality is, I really dont have to and I can skip here and there if I want to. We'll see what all shakes out, Mostly I am nervous about starting the speed stuff again (cause I have none) and it will be embarassing to be so slow! Anyway, Samantha, thanks for prompting me to blog - ive been meaning to! See you at Dox.
Cheers

revving back up!
Whats up ma nerds? YO YO YO!! I am staring to revv back up. I did a quick and dirty 5 miles with mike this am and it was great! We talked alot about what our running is going to look like once he finishes up his Escape from Alcatraz this weekend. I am jazzed, we are (or at least I am) gonna incorporate alot more speed work and add in some plyometric exercises. It will be good shiz.... good, good shiz. Im off to play with the kiddo!! Cheers everyone.

Starting again...
So I went running today for the first time since the 50K. I ran a bit over 3 miles and it felt pretty good. I felt horribly slow though compared to Mike. Im not sure what my running will look like now that the race is over. Mike is doing the alcatraz triathlon on the 8th and Im sure he will have some input on what the training will change to. I will post a few more pics of the race soon. Stay Classy!

the deets!
Okay, so here are the details of the race... Overall it was a ton of fun but I will first divulge the negatives: horribly marked trail, getting lost multiple times, and a real a-hole race helper who was a huge jerk.
So the race started out and I felt like $100. I was going nice and slow and felt great, the trail terrain was very good and it wasnt too steep or crazy. I met some really fun people the first 10K of the race, at the 10K peel off we were supposed to go left and go to the aid station and then go down a different trail to keep on the 50k path. Well, I asked a race guy right after I got off the 10k path which way to go for the 50K and he told me the wrong way, so I ended up skipping the first aid station...
I discovered that the group of runners thinned considerably and I was quickly alone. I did spot one runner and asked her if we were going the right way and we ended up hanging in there together for a while, until we realized we were going the wrong way and we were back near the first aid station - So I ran back to the first aid station and she ran a different direction since she had already been there.
So I went to the aid station refilled a water bottle (how have I not been running with the hand held water bottles - they are amazing!) and ran back from whence I had came.
I ran into a pack of 10 to 15 lost 50k'ers and we were all deciding which way to go. The trail was very poorly marked and we saw orange flags (what we were supposed to be following) one way, and nothing the next. So, I started running down the path I thought was right. It was not right.
A few people went the way I went too and we all eventually found ourselves back at the first aid station again. This is where we met a huge A-hole. I didnt get his name, but when we were asking for help getting on the right path he was being incredibly rude to us - seriously trying to make us feel stupid, one quote he said was "Ive done multiple ultras and I ALWAYS study the map first" I told him "well, this is my first one so give me some grace"
We ended up getting on the right path because the trail markings had been corrected and made our way to the second aid station. According to my watch we had run 19.4 miles and at the second aid station we still had a 12.4 mile loop to run, and then back to the start, another 12 to 13 miles. The girl I was running with, Mara, and I decided to just turn back at the second aid station and go to the finish line, easily putting us close to, or over the 31 mile distance.
Here is a fun little detail: I was having some GI stuff going on and was really hoping for a porta-pottie at the second aid station - for obvious reasons... Alas, there was no honey bucket for me to use. So I held it (turned out to be gas - took care of it on the way back :) ) So we made our way back - mostly downhill. I was hurting some, my feet were really sore and I was getting worn out. I did some walking on the uphills during this last stretch. Mara walked with me too for most of it, but closer to the end she took off and I would try to catch up to her when I ran.
Mara and I got to the first aid station for the final time and the A-hole was still there and reminded us several times to stay on the pink flagged trail. This we already knew. Thanks for the help... Jerk. Anyway, we tried to follow the pink trail, but it too was marked poorly - or at least it had become poorly marked due to random people messing with the flags. We stayed on the Wildwood path and finally made it to the right way back to the start.
When we hit the final straight away, I tried to turn it on and gave a good effort to the finish line. I was spent. My watch told me I ran 32.78 miles, almost 2 miles further than we were supposed to run. I got a t-shirt at the end (not a tech shirt and it is a lame design) and a coaster that says "first ultra-marathon" on it. I was more excited about the coaster than I was the shirt! I ate some chili and other snackies and then headed back to Salem.
Some of the highlights for me were Jess being at the finish line; finding someone to run with during the race (thanks Mara!) and running a challenging distance and doing my best and not quitting (which I wanted to do after getting lost for the 3rd time!).
Overall it was a great experience and I would totally do it again - but I would wait until Ari is older and is sleeping better and that way Jess wouldnt have to deal with the early morning runs as much.
Stay classy everyone!

The Day Approacheth!
Well, I am 2 days away from running my first 50K. I havent run hardly at all this week - I am okay with that. I needed a good taper from all the running I had been doing. I am having a sore shin for some reason - not sure why. But it has me slightly concerned about the run on Sunday. I really dont want to have to struggle with a weird sore shin thing during the race. I am gonna ice it today and hopefully that will help solve the problem. It will be a fun day on Sunday afternoon when it is all said and done! I will be glad I did it Im sure. I will be posting something about the race after its over. Take it easy everyone! Cheers.

Almost there
Well... its race week. I am in full taper mode, and would like to stay there forever! I am seriously freaking out internally about this race. I know once its over, I'll be glad, but right now, I dont even want to go to it! I am really taking it easy this week with running, hopefully it is a good decision... I probably should be doing a bit more than I am. Anyway, I will write more when I do something... Stay Classy.

One week out...
I am one week out from the 50K. I am in the middle of my taper and I just feel unprepared to take on this distance. I did an hour run today and I just felt like I was gonna die at the end of it. I am scared to death about running for 6+ hours next Sunday. Its gonna be brutal!
I know that adrenaline and the race environment will help me get thru a bunch of miles, and I have done most of the training to complete this race, but it is a very scary task.
Oh yeah... I am a huge wuss.

sleeping in... quickly losing motivation
So today I was supposed to go run 5 miles. I got up, got dressed and ready to go, and then laid on the couch and slept till 7am. I seriously have been so tired lately, all I want to do is sleep. Today while driving around a group of residents at work, I fell asleep at the stoplight. Luckily, my co-worker elbowed me awake before anyone noticed. It couldve been a bad deal. I will get up tomorrow and run with mike, that i know for sure. but I can tell you this much, I dont really want to! sleep is just so delicious right now. I cant wait for this race to be done so I can relax my running a bit.

easy on the running...
So... it feels like a while since my last update. I ran a little over 13 this past Saturday, and then on Sunday ran over 5. It was good being out both days, but I am feeling really burnt out on this training... It is just wearing me down. I am happy I have entered the "taper" phase of the program and am gearing down for the race on the 25th.
I have serious doubts about how well I will do. I know Im not gonna win it, thats not the point, but I still would like to feel good about my effort, and I know I havent given 100% to the training. Its been tough with a new baby to really devote the amount of time necessary to feel really, really prepared.
Today was my 7th anniversary and I ate way too much greasy food... gut-ache central. I am probably not going to run tomorrow and just try to get an extra hour and a half of sleepy time.
Later!

Rocky III
I felt like Rocky in Rocky 3 my past couple of runs. Remember that scene where he and Apollo are running on the beach and then at the end they prance around , hugging and high-fiving in the ocean when Rocky beats Apollo in the footrace? Yeah, so I felt like that minus the speed, and quasi gay celebration. I basically felt like I was running in the sand. I ran on tuesday for the first time since Saturday - a nice chunk of rest, and then I ran today with Mike and that was pretty good. But both runs (tuesday in particular) felt rough. I am getting pretty anxious about the 25th and my 50K race. It is gonna be a rough one. Stay Classy

3 weeks out
Three weeks away from my big race! On saturday I did 21 miles, some with Mike and the rest by myself. I had some serious water bottle issues, it was incredibly annoying, but I got the mileage in, and that is what counts. Yesterday I was supposed to run with Ted, but he called last minute and backed out, so I stayed home and let Jess sleep in and I took care of the kiddo. So... I didnt run at all yesterday, but I traded it in for something pretty good I'd say. Its one of those things where I want to stick to the schedule somewhat, but I also want to have a life! I am looking forward to this race being over so I can stop doing 2 long runs on the weekend. It sucks getting up at 4:30, 5 days a week.

horrible 5 miler
I did a horrible 5 miler today. It was horrible... I felt like crap from the start. I have been having fights with the wiff about stupid stuff and it has been weighing heavy on my heart and I carried that with me the whole run. I have to do 8 tomorrow and I havent been able to let go of any of the baggage. It is interesting how much emotional baggage can weigh you down when youre trying to exercise and unload it all. Its tough to let go of all that stuff we carry with us everyday even when we are trying to do something healthy.... we will see how the 8 goes tomorrow am.

distraught
I almost couldnt run today... I was so upset about Miley Cyrus's scandalous photo shoot. I mean, she was Really upset about it all. I just feel bad for her. Just kidding! I dont care at all. I am a jerk!!! HA HA HA ! I ran 8 miles today with mike. It was good to be out. If I wasnt meeting him, there is no way I wouldve gone out. I loves my sleepy time. Keep moving and stay classy.

running on fumes
I DID get up this morning and went running/walking, but I did NOT go for 3.5 hours. I went for just over 2 hours. It was terrible. I started walking and did some running in between, but overall it was mostly walking. I went a bit over 10 miles which I was somewhat happy with, but I wish I couldve ran the whole time. I know I did close to 50 miles for last week. I thought that was pretty cool. Anyway, its a new week. Lets see how it shapes up. Stay Classy!

Pulling it outta my Ace
I pulled a 20 miler outta my ace! I was stoked about it. Tomorrow I HAVE to go for 3 and a half hours. I am a little nervous about it. My plan is to just start walking and go from there. My goal is to just keep moving for as long as I have to... Right now I am watching Harry Potter on TV. Awesomefest '97. Stay Classy...

TGIT
Thank Goodness its Thursday! I did a shade over 8 this morning with Mike, we ran at a decent intensity - higher than most of my running has been anyway! I was happy with it. I am glad that today is Thursday, because its really my Friday! Tomorrow is a rest day for me, then I have to hit it for 3 hours on Sat. and 3.5 hours(at least) on Sunday. I am about a month out from the first 50K today! Gotta get ready - no more slacking! Stay Classy.

Blustery Run
It was a windy morning today! I did over 6 yesterday at work since a meeting got canceled. It was nice running at work again, it reminded me of running with my buddy Barry before he transferred units. Today I ran my 5er. It was pretty good, I fought going out the door like crazy, but Im glad I went. It is almost a month away from my 5oK. I am getting a little nervous about it all, and Im wondering if I will be able to do it.

this week
I ran 10.5 yesterday. I felt like I was still rebounding from my Carls Jr. binge. But it was good to be out that long. It was pretty crazy, it started snowing HUGE flakes about an hour into the run and it started sticking pretty good. It was enjoyable to run in. I made cinnamon rolls (from scratch) last night and Ive already eaten 5 of them. I seriously have to stop. Anyway... Ive gotta do 8 tomorrow, 5 on Wed, and 8 again on Thurs. Then, this weekend it jumps up huge. I have to run for at least 3 hours on Sat. and 3.5 hours on Sun. It will be a big mileage weekend if it all goes to plan. NO FAST FOOD or Cinnamon rolls!!

Garbage in/Garbage out
So... I was supposed to run for like 2 and a half or 3 hours today. But yesterday evening, I ate a shiz load of Carls Jr. Im talking like 2000 calories big. Needless to say, I did not run well today. I ran at the buffalo trail for like 3 and a half miles but just wasnt feeling it, so I drove to bush park and ran one lap. I just couldnt get it going today. Also, I donated blood yesterday, so I am sort of using that as an excuse as well. But mostly I am pretty worthless. I really need to pay closer attention to my diet and how it affects me in my running. Buh-Bye.

How bout a little something for the effort?
So, I tried to post about this earlier, but it didnt work. Anyway, I did 8 mile runs on Tuesday and Wednesday, and they both felt pretty good. I was watching some youtube clips on ultra running last night and it got me pretty fired up about my ultra coming up at the end of May. I am pretty stoked about it. I wish I knew some ultra runners here in Oregon, but alas, my network has not spread that far yet! I hope everyone is doing swell. Hugs and kisses, KD$
PS. shorter runs this weekend but the next two weekends are supposed to be super long. I am thinking about running to Jefferson!

loss of toenail!
I finally lost my toenail! Jess thought it was disgusting. I was glad it was gone. I did 11.3 yesterday all on pretty technical trails, it was fun, but dang! I was sore today. I did 6.66 miles (oohhh! bad #) today, it was really hard. My quads were super sore, but my heart rate was super low and I felt cardio wise that I couldve gone for a long time, but my legs just wouldnt take me much further.

Off the Heezy foh Sheezy
I did a 5 miler yesterday solo and got to run with Mike today and did an hour and 15 min. Im not sure the distance, I didnt check my watch b/c I was about to poop my drawers! I seriously sprinted home praying the whole way that I didnt have to poop in someones front yard. Day off tomorrow and then long on the weekend. I really cant slack on my Sunday run like I have these past 2 weeks. Ive gotta get in that second long run. I hope everyone is doing well. Cheers

Who has two thumbs and is a slacker?
This Guy! Well, once again, I slacked off on my second day of long training. I was supposed to do like a 2 to 2 1/2 hour run today, but totally slacked it off. I actually got up at 5am, got dressed, ready to go, and then decided to take a 30 minute nap before I took off - I figured, hey, I got the time... Well, the 30 minute nap turned into an hour and 10 minute nap and then Ari got up and I let Jess sleep in.
I cant slack off any more because I just registered for the Pacific Crest Trail Running Series Washington Park 50K! It is on May 25 (3 days after the newest installment of Indiana Jones - to be viewed with Brian Sexton in Corvallis!) So I cannot, I repeat, CANNOT keep slacking off like this on my long stuff, or I will not survive the 50K. I do not want a DNF (did not finish) attached to my first Ultra.

Nike 5K for Kids
Yesterday I got the flyer for the Nike 5K for Kids up at Nike World HQ. The race is June 7th at 8am. It is only $20 and it is at the Nike Campus! Sweet! Sign up soon, its a really fun race. I ran it last year with Andrew Jones (de-flowered as of yesterday) and it was a blast. Lots off cool post race booths and free stuff.
Today I ran around 16 or 17 (not sure, I accidentally pushed stop on my watch at 14.83 miles) Anyway, I am supposed to run long again tomorrow. Ask me at Dox if I did it! Stay Classy.

Weekday Runnings Informations
Did an easy 5 miler on wed. It was a decent run. I totally slacked on Tuesday. Today I ran with mike and did 8. It felt pretty good. Why is it I always have to pee so much during a run? For that matter, why is it I always seem to have a "poop-mergency"? Those are seriously killing me. Im not sure how to avoid it. I try to "evacuate" before every run, but it seems I like to hold some back just for a mid-run treat. Maybe I should just stop eating. That would solve the problem. Have special days everyone. Cheers to Andrew and Danae on their upcoming nuptials tomorrow night. It will be fun standing up there with you buddy! Its just too bad I cant get too wasted because I have to go long on Saturday!

Donuts are the Devil

I got super hungry last night for something to eat, so Jess went out to Dunkin (Daynight) Donuts and got a dozen. Last night I ate 4 and felt like crap... Didnt go run this morning because I stayed up so late watching a movie and feeling like garbage because I ate all those donuts! So... what is the first thing I did when I got home? I ate 4 donuts again! (the leftovers) Right now I dont feel too bad, but I know its coming. Tomorrow I am running with Mike, that will be good.
No more donuts for a while!

Save the Drama fo yo Mama
Okay, so this past week, I didnt do crap. So... this weekend, I tried a bit harder. I ran 15 miles with Mike on Saturday and it felt awesome. I know I couldve gone further, but the 15 got'er done for me. I then was supposed to get up early Sunday am and go out for like an hour and a half... I slept in till 8:30 and then went out and ran 4 miles with Ari in the jogging stroller. It was a decent run, it was slow going because the tires sunk into the wet barkdust. I slogged thru it and then ran to the Dutch Bros on S. Commercial and said "Wut Up" to my friend Andrew. SO! Tomorrow is a day off, then Ive gotta not be a slacker and hit it on Tues, Wed, and Thurs. Friday is Andrew Jones' wedding and then Saturday Ive gotta hit it long again, at least 3 hours. If anyone reads this, post a comment!! Cheers, and Happy Movement.

I have a huge vagina
I suck at running this week. I have opted for sleep all three weekdays I was supposed to run. Slept in on Tuesday, got up and dressed on Wednesday, but decided to sleep on the couch, and didnt even bother trying to get up this morning. I suck. Mike gets back in town tomorrow and is going to run long with me on Saturday, so that will be good.

Running Solo
All my running buddies are out of town with their families on spring break! I am running solo this week. Tomorrow is an 8 miler, then an easy 5 on Wednesday and another 8 miler on Thursday. Last week I ran just a shade over 50 miles, the most Ive ever ran! I was very pleased.

Weekend Running
I did 20.03 miles yesterday! Its the furthest Ive ever run. I felt pretty good about it too. This am, I did only 8 miles. I was dying!! The entire run, from start to finish, all I could think about was going back to bed. I was just dogging it. I was supposed to do a 3 hour run, but could only manage around an hour and twenty five minutes. I had to constantly take a piss and then this old dude kept asking me about my headlamp everytime we would cross paths. So I kept getting interrupted. Not a very good excuse I know, but its all Ive got. I got home, at the other half of my banana and then went back to bed and slept till 10! It was awesome, I felt totally refreshed. Happy Easter everyone! Cheers

8 Miler
I did my 8 miler today and it felt alright. One thing I really hate is when you see other people out running at 5am and you wave hello, or say "good morning" and you get snubbed. What a bunch of shiz! You would think there would be some comraderie amongst fellow runners, but alas, I find more often than not, that no one says hello. (I feel like Uncle Leo from Seinfeld)
Losing toenails or having discolored toenails seems to be a badge of honor among ultra runners, so I am proud to say I am getting some purple nails without polish! Once it gets really good and ugly, I will post a pic.

Garmin Forerunner 50 sucks balls
Okay, so another quick post: The Garmin Forerunner 50 Sucks Balls. Seriously. I got it for Christmas this past year and they advertise it as Mac compatible - it is so not. Also, it only has a 7 hour memory and I only have the opportunity to upload the info about once a week. Well, I am gonna have to try harder to get it plugged into a PC so I can upload the info because I ran out of memory over the weekend. I will appreciate the FR50 more once the douchebags at Garmin get their shit together and update the Ant+Sportstick driver for Macs.
When Ive tried to contact Garmin, I have gotten pretty much horrible customer service. They actually tried to upsell me into a FR350 even after I explained to them that the FR50 was the only product in my budget. They are terribly slow in their email responses (if you can navigate their shitty website)
Okay, I am now off my Garmin hatebox for now.
Wannabeultra Out!

God Bless Days Off
I ran around 8 on Tuesday, I dont recall if I posted about that, but in case I didnt, I ran around 8 on Tuesday with my friend Mike. Toward the end, I about had a poop-mergency and hand to sprint home to make it just in time! I was supposed to do an easy 5 today, but just couldnt roll my ass outta bed. I was so so tired. Tomorrow is another 8 miler, I promise I wont slack off on that one. Cheers.

Rest, Glorious Rest!
Today is a rest day. I am very pleased with this. Ive got a buddy who keeps telling me that with amping up my training like this, I am risking serious injury and immune system breakdown. Im sure he is partially right, but its somewhat annoying. My rest day is involving watching lots of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and am planning on eating fish tacos later.

second slice of the sandwich
I did 15 miles today. It was way tougher than yesterdays 19.3. My legs felt like blocks of concrete for the first hour. Day of rest tomorrow, that will be nice.

First slice of bread
I did first part of my intentional sandwiching of back to back long runs today. I ran for 3 hours and did 19.3 miles. I was pretty pleased. It felt pretty good overall. Got home and took a 20 minute ice bath before my shower. I am anxious for tomorrows long run... I hope it goes okay. I am shooting for another 3 hour run. (pic is from 2007 Hagg Lake Mud Run. I did the 25K race)
